Blast Optimization

Blast optimization at the Morvarid Iron Ore Mine is managed as a core engineering function rather than a routine operational task. A dedicated Blasting Technical Committee, composed of senior mining and blasting specialists, governs the full blasting cycle—from design and drilling to execution and post-blast assessment. Through continuous analysis of field data, blasting patterns are systematically refined to enhance productivity while minimizing environmental impacts.

The program prioritizes precision, safety, and full parameter control. For each blast pattern—ore or waste—the drilling geometry, charge configuration, and initiation sequence are engineered to deliver predictable fragmentation, controlled energy release, and stable pit conditions.

Primary Objectives
  • Management of blast-induced vibrations in accordance with environmental and operational thresholds;
  • Fragmentation optimization to achieve consistent, downstream-efficient size distribution;
  • Flyrock risk reduction and enhancement of workplace safety;
  • Effective bench toe control to prevent residual toes and unplanned instability;
  • Back-break mitigation to preserve final wall integrity and long-term slope stability.

Engineering Measures Implemented
  • Pattern design optimization tailored to rock mass properties and fragmentation targets;
  • High-accuracy definition of hole collaring, inclination, and depth using precise surveying and geotechnical inputs;
  • Controlled selection of explosive type and charge weight, with optimized stemming to regulate gas energy and breakage mechanisms;
  • Engineered initiation sequencing utilizing digital delays to reduce vibration and improve blast controllability;
  • Post-blast performance evaluation and structured feedback loops to continuously improve subsequent blast designs.

This disciplined, data-driven approach has resulted in higher blasting accuracy, lower overall operating costs, improved safety performance, and a tangible reduction in vibration levels and environmental disturbance—positioning Morvarid among the country’s more advanced operations in controlled and responsible blasting practice.
